
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters From Becoming a Hazard
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing just about everywhere else. Standard housing just won’t cut it here. To keep things from shorting out, we stick with IP66-rated enclosures and a very specific way of sealing them up.
Dealing with the Steam
When people see “IP66,” they think about big splashes of water. But in a bathroom, the real villain is the condensation. Vapor is sneaky. It finds the tiniest gaps, settles on the electrical contacts, and suddenly you’ve got a conductive path where you don’t want one. We fight this with silicone gaskets and cable glands that are hermetically sealed. If that seal gives way, you’re looking at a tripped GFCI at best, or fried internal wiring at worst. Not a great way to start your morning.
Insulation That Actually Lasts
We spend a lot of time thinking about the materials that keep the electricity where it belongs. To keep you safe, we use high-temperature ceramic insulators to separate the heating element from the outer chassis. These things are tough. They don’t degrade even when the heater is constantly cycling between scorching hot and cold. We also use silicone or PTFE jackets for the wiring. Why? Because standard insulation cracks over time under that kind of heat, and that’s when things get dangerous.
The Balancing Act
There’s a specific order to how we wire these. You have to bond the chassis to the earth groundbeforeyou ever give the lamp power. Period. But here’s the tricky part. A fully sealed IP66 box is great for keeping water out, but it’s also great at trapping heat inside. This makes the area around the electronics get incredibly hot. If you just jam everything in there too tightly, that “heat soak” will kill your lamp’s lifespan. You have to be smart about your wire gauges and connector types to make sure the insulation doesn’t fail early. Our trick is using a mounting bracket that’s shielded from water but still lets the unit breathe. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between “waterproof” and “not melting itself.”
