
Stop Heating Your Vacuum Chamber Walls
If you’ve ever worked with carbon nanotube (CNT) fabrication, you know the struggle with thermal profiles. Most of us start with standard resistive heaters, but there’s a glaring problem: they heat everything. You end up with a vacuum chamber that’s basically a giant oven. The inner walls get so hot they can actually burn you or fry the electronics sitting right next to the machine. It’s frustrating and, frankly, a bit dangerous. The fix is simpler than you’d think: stop using omnidirectional heat. Instead of letting energy bleed out in every direction, we use directional infrared (IR) lamps. Think of it like switching from a lightbulb that fills a room to a flashlight that hits a specific spot. By using reflectors and a bit of geometry, we push the heat exactly where it needs to go—the CNT growth zone. The result? Your substrate gets the high heat it needs, but the chamber walls stay cool. You can actually touch them. How it works in the real world We set these systems up based on how much heat flux you actually need. We use high-wattage quartz lamps because they ramp up fast. When you’re running tight fabrication cycles, you can’t afford to sit around waiting for a chamber to warm up. Plus, these wire right into your existing PLC controllers via SCRs, so you don’t have to rebuild your entire control system. But here’s the catch. Directional heating creates a very steep thermal gradient. It’s precise—maybe too precise. If your lamp is off by just a few millimeters, or if your substrate is a bit too large, you’ll see uneven growth across the wafer. You have to be meticulous about the distance and the angle during your first setup. Get it right once, and you’re golden. A safer shop floor Getting rid of that “ghost heat” on the walls isn’t just about saving a few bucks on the electric bill. It’s about not getting burned. When the walls aren’t soaking up excess radiation, maintenance becomes a lot less stressful. You can retrieve your samples or tweak the hardware without worrying about a nasty contact burn. It just makes the whole workspace feel tighter, cleaner, and a lot safer.
