Dealing with splashes (and heat)
The IPX4 rating is just a fancy way of saying these units can handle water splashing at them from any angle. If you’re working in a wash-down area or somewhere with thick humidity, you need this. We used heavy-duty gaskets and specific housing materials to make sure moisture stays far away from the electrical contacts. But here’s the thing: when you seal something tight to keep water out, you lose some of that natural airflow. Since the housing is snug, you’ve got to keep an eye on the internal temperature. If you’re pushing maximum wattage in a space with zero air movement, that “heat soak” can start to wear down your connectors over time. Just something to keep on your radar.
The reality of field repairs
Anyone who’s actually done this knows that replacing a tube after five years is a nightmare. You’re dealing with brittle insulation and contacts that have oxidized into a crust.
