A lot of semiconductor lines are still stuck using hot air circulation. If you’ve worked with these, you know the drill. You heat the air, the air heats the chamber, and eventually, the wafer gets warm. It’s a slow process. It feels like waiting for a giant pot of water to boil when you just need a quick sear. That’s why so many people are moving to infrared (IR) heating. It basically cuts out the middleman. Instead of warming up the whole room, IR beams energy straight into the target. The real cost of waiting Hot air systems have a lot of “thermal inertia”—which is just a fancy way of saying they take forever to get moving. You spend minutes just staring at a screen, waiting for the chamber to hit the right temperature. With IR, you’re hitting those targets in seconds. For an engineer on the floor, that’s a massive win. You aren’t just saving a few bucks on the power bill; you’re getting more wafers through the line every single hour. It just makes the whole day move faster. The wiring headache Here is where things usually go wrong: the wiring. Standard PVC wire is useless here. It’ll melt the moment things get hot. That’s why we stick with Teflon-coated wire. It can handle the brutal heat right next to those IR lamps without degrading or shorting out. It keeps the power flowing steady, even when you’re pushing the heater to its absolute limit. It’s not a magic trick Now, IR isn’t a perfect “plug and play” solution. Since the heat is directional, you have to be smart about where the lamps go. If you’re off by an inch, you’ll end up with cold spots on your wafer. You can’t just toss an IR heater into an old convection oven and hope for the best. You have to map out the “view factor” and be careful with your cable routing. Keep those Teflon wires out of the direct line of sight of the lamps, or you’ll be replacing them way sooner than you’d like. Still, for anyone running a high-precision line, IR is the way to go. It kills the lag time that usually kills your productivity.
