
Keeping Your Gold-Coated IR Lamps from Blowing Up
In the world of semiconductor fab, gold-coated infrared lamps do the heavy lifting for your thermal profiles. That gold layer isn’t just for show—it pushes the heat forward onto the wafer and keeps the lamp housing from getting cooked. But here is the catch: these things live in high-precision environments. One tiny electrical leak? That’s all it takes to scrap a whole batch of wafers or fry a controller board. It’s a nightmare you just don’t want to deal with.
Why we test every single tube
We don’t do “random sampling” here. That’s too risky. Instead, every single tube goes through high-voltage withstand and insulation resistance tests before it even thinks about leaving our floor. We hit them with a voltage way higher than what they’ll see in your machine. Why? Because we need to know the quartz envelope and electrode seals are airtight and totally non-conductive. If there’s a microscopic crack or a bit of junk on a seal, the hipot test will find it. It’s much better to catch a dud in our factory than to have an “arc-over” event happen the second you flip the switch on your equipment.
Dealing with the heat
The gold coating makes these lamps incredibly efficient at hitting target temperatures fast. But that concentrated heat puts a lot of stress on the ends of the lamp. Check your cooling fans. Really check them. If the ends get too hot, the internal pressure climbs, and your lamp will burn out way sooner than it should.
A few tips for installation
These lamps are designed for tight spaces, which means there’s no room for error. When you’re installing them, make sure those connectors are seated firmly. A loose connection is basically a heater. It creates hotspots that can eat away at the gold layer or even melt your wiring. We build these to take a beating in a semiconductor tool, but they still need a stable environment. If your power fluctuates or your thermal management is sloppy, the life of the lamp is going to drop. Keep the power steady, keep them cool, and they’ll do their job.
